Let me sum up this course: a guy who calls himself Kevin and whose name and credentials remain unknown to us reads out a bunch of jargon-ridden slides. The reading lacks punch. That's it. Students do get access to a mainframe machine, but never get to write a line of code nor do anything else in the labs than navigate menus with zero explanation of the options presented to them, and type mysterious single-letter commands next to some file name. As for the official instructor, Erik Herman, he never shows up other than as a name and signature on the students' course certificate. The same goes for the rest of the specialisation so far. The first course in the series is pretty much the same, although the instructor, Jeff Bisti, delivers the content with significantly more energy than "Kevin".

Reviewed Jul 10, 2024Theres zero writing of cobol in the labs, you don't even touch cobol in this course like you did in cobol basics, and "touching" is a generous description.

Reviewed Feb 5, 2026In depth coverage of basic COBOL concepts not covered in the Basics course. Numbers, storage, and arithmetic are covered (though the labs are a bit confusing). A number of topics on editing (converting) numbers as well as very quick, basic coverage of Perform, Loops, and If statements are covered. Structured COBOL, testing, and abends are also included. Reports & call exec are next, but without a lot in terms of doing some reports on your own. Tables (arrays), sorting, merging, and intrinsic functions are very quickly reviewed to end the course. Take your time if this is new and take as many notes as you can; you'll need them later.

Reviewed Sep 19, 2026Good course, but it has a few friction points. First, the virtual machine link at the beginning of the course does not work. Additionally, the technical complexity increases significantly, making it quite challenging for a beginner, even with the foundation from previous modules. More practical, hands-on exercises are definitely needed to fully grasp these advanced concepts.

Reviewed Oct 3, 2025I would have benefited from a few more examples, e.g., how to subscript a 2-dimensional table, and an example or lab with both input and output phases. There were no examples of MERGE or its purpose.

Reviewed Sep 21, 2025A good COBOL course (probably the best online); very theoretical, I expected more exercises and this initially misled me about the usefulness and real need for Skytap.

Reviewed Jun 17, 2025Did not go into enough detail over each topic. Moved too fast without showing proper examples and explaining how it works. Just expects you to pause and figure it out. The labs are pointless and not needed as all they do is have you look at something and then compile it.

Reviewed Sep 23, 2025Bizarre structure with quizzes in module 1 referencing content not introduced until module 4. AI slop. I half wonder if the narration and script on the videos isn't AI generated too.

Reviewed Jun 8, 2023it was very, very dense and boring, and the labs pretty much repeats itself with no opportunity to write cobol from scratch. you will have to take the initiative to learn how to code on your own instead
