There are 4 modules in this course

This module examines why DNA is the genetic material, how its structure supports its role, and how it is replicated. You will compare semiconservative replication in bacteria and eukaryotes and follow nucleotide polymerization, leading- and lagging-strand synthesis, and chromosome replication. By the end of the module, you will be able to explain the molecular steps of DNA replication across different cellular contexts.

What's included

5 readings10 assignments

This module follows RNA from structure through transcription, processing, and decay. You will compare mRNA transcription and decay in bacteria with transcription, mRNA processing, splicing, and decay in eukaryotes. By the end of the module, you will be able to explain how RNA molecules are produced, modified, and removed in different cellular systems.

What's included

5 readings10 assignments

This module examines protein structure and the process by which genetic information is translated into protein. You will work with the genetic code, tRNAs, ribosomes, peptide-bond formation, translation, and mechanisms of translational and post-translational regulation. You will also analyze wobble and nonsense suppression to connect changes in decoding with protein synthesis.

What's included

5 readings10 assignments

This module introduces methods for detecting and quantifying DNA, RNA, and protein and for generating recombinant DNA. You will compare PCR, real-time qPCR, plasmid cloning, Northern and Western blotting, and dideoxy sequencing, then examine genome engineering through transgenic mice and CRISPR. By the end of the module, you will be able to select and explain methods for common gene-isolation and manipulation tasks.
