There are 3 modules in this course

This module examines the molecular origins and consequences of DNA damage and mutation. You will distinguish point mutations, spontaneous and induced mutations, and replication-slippage events, then compare major DNA-repair mechanisms. By the end of the module, you will be able to analyze how specific forms of damage arise and how cells repair them.

What's included

4 readings8 assignments

This module examines transposable elements as contributors to genome change. You will trace their discovery in maize, compare transposable elements in bacteria and eukaryotes, and study replicative transposition, retroviral life cycles, and Ty1 retrotransposition. You will also examine how hosts regulate transposable-element movement and how these elements contribute to a dynamic genome.

What's included

5 readings10 assignments

This module focuses on large-scale changes in chromosome number and structure and their phenotypic consequences. You will analyze segregation in autotetraploids, nondisjunction in meiosis I and II, and the formation and meiotic behavior of inversions and reciprocal translocations. By the end of the module, you will be able to interpret karyotypes and predict genetic outcomes of major chromosomal changes.
